How to Choose a Wheel LIMITED

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Limited Capacity seats available

Looking to buy a wheel but don’t know where to begin? Have a wheel but are thinking of getting another? Overwhelmed with all the choices and aren’t sure how to keep it all straight? This class is for you!

Our focus will be not on which wheel to choose but on how to choose. To do that, we will discuss various aspects of a wheel - drive types, orifice types, bobbins, treadles, ratios, and much, much more. We’ll talk about what kind of yarn you want to make, and how to know that the wheel you pick will be able to handle the work you want to produce.

You will leave with the knowledge you need to be able to assess any wheel and make sound judgments on whether it will suit you and your needs. You may bring a wheel (in working condition only) if you already have one. If you don’t, there will be wheels to try. Bring a notebook for taking notes. Handouts will be provided, and fiber for “test-driving” all the wheels will be provided.

Level of experience: Should be able to spin a continuous yarn and ply, so that students can try the wheels available. The information would still be very useful for a non-spinner, but no spinning instruction will be provided.

Materials Provided by Instructor: Fiber for trying the wheels, handouts

Materials Provided by Student: A wheel if you have one, notebook and pen/pencil

Homework: None
